Teaching Critical Communication skills: HELP! I cannot WAIT to ask for a BREAK and more

Formally Teaching Communication Skills for Independence. This training discusses how to teach critical communication skills that lead to greater independence in the home, work, school and community settings for all learners regardless of communicative modality. Topics covered include: following visual directions & timetables, answering ‘yes’ and ‘ no’, learning to wait, transitioning between activities, asking for help or a break, and coping when your learner is denied something they want.

Individuals with complex communication needs must master certain critical communication skills if they are to function independently across all settings. One set of critical skills deals with expressive communication – skills individuals need to convey important messages to others. Specific skills include requesting reinforcers, requesting help, requesting a break, acceptance and rejection skills. Teaching of these five critical expressive communication skills is vital, and often leads to a reduction in unwanted behaviour.

A second set of critical skills relates to receptive communication – a person’s ability to understand important messages from others. Specific skills include waiting, following directions, schedule following, and transitions. Failure to understand such messages may be distressing and could be dangerous for the individual. In order to reduce contextually inappropriate behaviours that occur as the result of such distress, and to ensure that the individual is safe, we need to teach these four critical receptive communication skills.
